Friday Faves 3/29/13

Woo Hoo!!!  It’s finally 50 degrees here in Chicagoland!  I am SO excited because that means more time spent outdoors and not cooped up in the house.  To celebrate this break in the weather, here are my favorite things to do outside in the springtime – for free, near the house.

1.) Run around the backyard.  My son loves to be outside to do…well, anything really.  Blowing bubbles, kicking around the soccer ball, and just enjoying the fresh air.  We plan to do A LOT of that this year.

Toddler Backyard

2.) Head to a local park.  I’m lucky in that there are 4-5 really nice parks within walking distance of my house.  And, while swinging on the swings isn’t exactly my son’s favorite thing to do at the park, he does love going down the slides and climbing up the ladders.  Hopefully we have enough rain-free days to visit the park!

Toddler at the Park

3.) Go for a bike ride.  Admittedly, my son is a little too young to join us on a bike ride (and those bicycle trailers for the kids kinda freak me out), but I love to hop on a bike as much as possible.  Nature trails – here I come!!!

That’s it for this week’s Friday faves – got to go enjoy the fresh air!!!

Friday Faves 3/15/13

Happy Friday!  I don’t know about you, but I am really glad the weekend is finally here.  We’ve got a busy one planned…but I kinda like it that way.  This week, my baby girl turns 14 (not so much of a baby, huh?).  In honor of her special day, my Friday Faves this week will be all about her.  Here are a few of my favorite things about my favorite daughter:

Birthday Girl

1.)  She makes me laugh.  Whether it’s her being silly, or incorrectly answering a question, or doing something completely weird – the girl can make me laugh.  She can bring levity to a situation, and that’s an important quality to have.

Birthday Girl Silly2

2.) She has a great relationship with her little brother.  I know it isn’t easy to cultivate a relationship with a sibling that’s more than 10 years younger than you are.  I love that my daughter tries, and hangs out with her little brother a lot.  He really looks up to her and it’s nice that she doesn’t shove him out of her room every time.

Birthday Girl Brother

3.) She loves to BAKE!  C’mon, what sweet-lovin’ mom wouldn’t love that?!?!  I love how she’s always looking for new recipes to try and we all really love being her guinea pigs.  We’ve had brownies, cookies, bars, cakes, muffins, scones…we’re a lucky bunch.  She’s really good too.  Just waitin’ on that pie, baby girl!

Birthday Girl Baking

So there you have it, a few of my favorite things about the birthday girl.  I love that girl SO MUCH!!!

Happy Birthday – and try to reign in the “teenager-ey” part, please!

Friday Faves 3/8/13

It’s time for this week’s Friday Faves! I started this series as a way to share some of my favorite things from the past week. They can be products, websites, experiences, TV shows, or just whatever tickled my fancy this week. Here were my faves of the week!

family-circle

1.)  Family Circle Magazine.  I might be aging myself a bit here, but I recently (within the last few months) started reading this magazine and I LOVE IT!  The articles, the recipes…all fantastic!  It’s kinda scary to think that the entertainment magazines that I used to read (US Weekly, People) just don’t interest me much anymore.  I mean, I’ll read them if they’re lying around at the doctor’s office, but I definitely won’t purchase one at the store.  Besides, I really don’t care who Taylor Swift is dating nowadays…

solar system decals

2.) Solar System Decals.  A friend of mine recently visited me and said that my family room looks like a kindergarten classroom.  The sad part is, she’s not lying.  We have completely lost control of our family room.  The floors are covered in toys and trains, and the walls are covered in, well…the solar system.  Yep, these lovely decals adorn my family room wall.  And you know what?  I am totally ok with that.

Rockets No-Sew Fleece Blanket

3.) JoAnn Fabrics.  Lately I have been obsessed with making things.  I see something and I just have to try and make it.  Recently I wanted to make a blanket for my son.  Nothing fancy, just one of those no-sew ones.  Again, he loves anything having to do with outer space, planets, rockets, etc. and I found this really cute aliens/rocket fleece.  I bought a ton of fabric at JoAnn’s and still have a few projects to complete.  Love the fabric selection there!

That’s it for this week.  I’ll be sharing some more of my favorite things the same time next week…be sure to come back!

Friday Faves 02/22/13

It’s time for this week’s Friday Faves! I started this series as a way to share some of my favorite things from the past week. They can be products, websites, experiences, TV shows, or just whatever tickled my fancy this week. Here were my faves of the week!

The Walking Dead

1.) The Walking Dead.  It feels a little weird to say that a zombie show is on my favorite things list.  You should know that I typically DO NOT like anything scary or gory.  In fact, the last scary movie I saw at the movie theater was the one where the little kid saw dead people – and my eyes were completely closed for 80% of the movie!  (It was a really long time ago.)  However, I am not a fan of the show because of the creepy-looking zombies.  I love the show because I think the storylines are some of the best on TV.  The writers on this show are amazing (and I totally love Daryl! Just had to throw that in there.).  And, it’s also one of two shows that my husband and I actually watch together – and, no, the other show is not any of the Real Housewives.

Man in an Apron

2.) Men that cook.  My husband and I both work full-time jobs and, while I relish my “Mommy role” at home, sometimes I’m just too tired to get dinner on the table every night.  Thankfully, my husband has saved us from many, many pizza take-out expenses.  Before we met he could barely fry an egg, but now he has come to love cooking and makes dinner for the family a couple of nights a week.  I even think that the kids like his food better than mine!

Cafe Escapes_Cafe Mocha

3.) Café Escapes.  Café Escapes is a premium collection of hot cocoas and dairy based beverages that you can brew at home with a Keurig machine (they come in single-brew K-Cups).  BzzAgent sent me some samples of Café Escapes to try recently and Holy Cow – these flavors are awesome!  Personally, I love the Café Mocha (I only added a little milk) – the flavor is so rich and so sweet, I could drink one every day.  And, at less than 70 calories, I can do just that…GUILT FREE!  If you have a Keurig brewing machine you have to try these. YUMMY!!!

Well, that’s it for this week.  Be sure to stop by again to catch a few more of my Friday Faves!

Friday Faves 2/15/13

I can hardly believe that Valentine’s Day has already passed this calendar year.  To say that time is flying by would be an understatement – it’s more like speeding by like a Formula One race car!  Well, in honor of Valentine’s Day this week, today’s Friday Faves will be all about love.  Or, things that remind me of love.  Here we go…

Valentine's Day Craft for Toddlers

1.) My Valentine’s Day Bouquet – I’m pretty fortunate that my mom was once a preschool teacher.  She helped my son create this beautiful bouquet of hearts for me for Valentine’s Day.  My son was pretty into the holiday this year too – I think he said “Happy Valentine’s Day” about 50 times!

Serendipity_Movie

2.) Serendipity – Both the movie, and the luck!  But mostly the movie.  I fell in love with the film, Serendipity, the very first time I saw it for a bunch of reasons.  One – I love romantic comedies. Two – I think John Cusak and Jeremy Piven (both from Chicago) are great actors, and Kate Beckinsdale is one of my favorites.  And three – I wholeheartedly believe in the romantic notion of destiny, or fortunate accidents, or the the idea that something is meant to be.

The Cure

3.) Just Like Heaven – The Cure.  What would a love “favorites” list be without a great song mention.  I guess I could mention any of today’s hits that I love, but, since I’m feeling a bit nostalgic at the moment, Just Like Heaven takes me back to my high school days.  I fell in love with alternative music in my teens and listened to bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, Violent Femmes, Nirvana, 311 and other 80’s and 90’s alternative bands.  Thank God for Pandora – I still listen to these bands regularly.  I once read that Robert Smith, The Cure’s lead singer, wrote Just Like Heaven for his wife – and you just can’t get any more romantic than that.  And, c’mon admit it, I know you’re loving the 80’s Aqua Net hairdos too!

Well, that wraps up my Valentine’s Week faves.  Be sure to come back next week to check out some more of my favorite things.

Friday Faves 2/1/13

Time for this week’s Friday Faves! I started this series as a way to share some of my favorite things from the past week. They can be products, websites, experiences, TV shows, or just whatever tickled my fancy this week. Here were my faves of the week!

Scream & Shout

1.) Scream & Shout – will.i.am & Britney Spears.  I know I might be a little late catching this boat, but I just can’t help cranking up the volume in my car and jamming to this song.  I’ll never forget one radio DJ saying “Who’s that other guy singing with will.i.am on this track?”.  Hilarious.  I love Brit Brit, but she probably should lay off the smokes now.  The song, though, is awesome.  Britney, Bitch.  Love it!

Adobo Seasoning

2.) Adobo Seasoning.  I use this seasoning just about every day when I’m cooking.  I currently have three different varieties in my spice rack right now.  I use the Goya brand, but there are plenty out there (well, if you visit a Hispanic grocery store, that is).  Adobo is a common dry seasoning used to marinate meat, chicken, and fish.  Even if I’m making a recipe I found in a book or magazine, I almost always season the meat with adobo first.  It’s a Puerto Rican thing. Smile

Blue BIC Pens Box

3.) Blue BIC Pens.  Yeah, I realize this one is a little random, but to know me is to know that I am also totally random sometimes.  And particular.  Very particular.  Some might even say OCD-particular.  Either way you see it, I really don’t like using black pens.  Why?  Who knows.  To tell you how crazy particular I can be, if I’m filling out paperwork – whether at a doctor’s office, the DMV, or anywhere else – and they give me a black pen to use, I kindly hand it back and use the blue BIC pen I always carry on me in my purse.  The ones pictured above are my favorites.  I just might have a few boxes at home.  I totally have a few boxes at home.  OCD?  You be the judge.

Hope you enjoyed this (kinda odd) edition of my Friday Faves!  Be sure to come back next week!
