BOGO at Discovery Center Museum in Rockford!

Discovery Center Museum_Rockford

We love this children’s museum in Rockford, IL!  They have everything you’d expect at a children’s museum – without the crowds of a big city museum.  In fact, we visited last winter to check out everything the museum has to offer, then made a return visit for the Treasure Exhibit.  We have so much fun and can’t wait to go back!

The amazing Discovery Center Museum is full of over 250 exciting hands-on exhibits spread over a two-floor area.  Out in the museum’s backyard, visitors can explore Rock River Discovery Park, a giant, multi-level science park with a hands-on twist!  The museum also hosts traveling exhibits, special events and programs throughout the year.

My readers can take advantage of this special offer to the museum: Buy One General Admission and Get One Free.  Not valid with other offers. Offer valid up to 3 free admissions.

There’s Still Time to Visit the Treasure Exhibit at the Discovery Center Museum in Rockford!

The Treasure Exhibit is still in Rockford, but for a limited time only.  Why not take the family this weekend before they roll out of town?

I would recommend the Treasure Exhibit for older kids, but that doesn’t mean your little one won’t have fun.  You start off with a “passport” and your object is to use the clues to find the exhibit with the stamps to stamp your passport.  If you find all the exhibits (I think there are 6) you get a piece of treasure from the treasure chest!

Some of my toddler’s favorite parts of the exhibit were:

Sink a Pirate Ship – an interactive game where you aim to shoot a computerized pirate ship with a cannon.

The Art Corner – Make a treasure chest, color a pirate ship, and glue on some shapes!

ROV –  Operate a Remotely Controlled Vehicle.

Puppet Show – Tell a funny story with a puppet show.

Treasure Hunt – Look for treasure with a real metal detector!

And in the end, collect your prize!

The science, technology, history, and thrill of treasure hunting are explored in the fantastic traveling exhibition Treasure! Discovery Center Museum Rockford

My Experience:  Last week, I told you about my visit to the Rockford Art Museum, and how I was just itching to get back to take my son to the Discovery Center Museum, located in the same building.  I had no idea that Rockford had a Children’s Museum and, although this was a bit of a drive for me, I couldn’t be happier that we decided to go.  I knew that my son would likely enjoy spending some time there, but there would have been no way for me to guess just how much he would love it.  There are just so many reasons why I loved about this museum, but, in order to keep this post at a reasonable length, I’ll take you through my top 5.

Fewer Crowds

Discovery Center Rockford Space

I can remember taking my daughter to the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier when she was younger and literally have to wait around for an exhibit to open up so she could play.  I’m a working mom so most of my family outings are on the weekends – of course when most kid’s venues are jam packed.  We visited the Discovery Center Museum on a Saturday afternoon, and I was shocked to see that, while yes, there were a lot of people there, I wasn’t bumping elbows with anyone while following my kid around.  The place was uncongested enough that I felt comfortable letting my son roam around, while my husband and I simply followed him wherever he wanted to go.  A big plus for this place!

Plentiful Space

The Discovery Center Museum has exhibits that would interest children of all ages with subjects ranging from math & science, to agriculture and weather, this museum has age-appropriate lessons for all kids that encourage learning through play.

Discovery Center Space2

You’d never know from the outside, but the Discovery Center Museum is a huge space spanning 2 levels.

Tot Space

One of our favorite places in the Museum was the Tot Spot, a learn & play space specifically designed for kids under the age of 6.  Here we made pizzas, played in the water zone, learned how to work on a car, played with the train table, and so much more.  We spent a majority of our time here (as you can see from the photos below) – he still asks every day if we can go back to the “zee-um”.

Outdoor Rock River Discovery Park

This part of the museum looks really cool, but we visited on a cold day in January so, of course, it wasn’t open.  The Rock River Discovery Park is a hands-on, outdoor science center where kids can learn about different subjects like dinosaurs, sound, and just run around and play!  We can’t wait to come back when the weather’s nicer!

Hands-On Exhibits

Once again, this entire space is hands-on and the kids really love it.  There are so many things to do and explore here – we are so glad to took the trip and will definitely be back again soon.  We are seriously considering a membership because, at only $80 for the year, it would pay for itself in a little more than 3 visits for us – and I know we’ll be back more than 3 times in the next year.

I’ll leave you with a few more photos of our experience.  If ever you’re in the area, please stop by the Discovery Center Museum and let me know how you liked it! Smile

Chicagoland Spots: BATMAN LIVE Coming to Rockford, IL

I am so excited about this one.  I think my 2-year-old will flip!  For those of you in the Chicagoland area with kids that love Batman, this one’s for you!

For the first time in DC Comics history, Batman – the world’s most popular DC Super Hero – is now an all-new, live-action arena spectacular which is taking the world by storm. BATMAN LIVE is a 15 million dollar stage production with an original story featuring a 43 strong cast of actors and circus trained acrobats, a 3D Gotham City landscape, a bespoke symphonic score, custom-built state-of-the-art stage, a 100 foot bat-shaped LED video wall, pyrotechnics and the impressive Batmobile, designed especially for the show by legendary racing car designer Professor Gordon Murray.

Faithfully adapted from the DC Comics characters and stories, BATMAN LIVE focuses on Robins quest for justice, which leads him to follow in the footsteps of his hero the mysterious vigilante known as Batman, much to the dismay of his protective guardian, billionaire Bruce Wayne, whom the audience knows is secretly Batman. This dynamic triangle resolves itself in a non-stop thrill-ride across Gotham City that transforms Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson into the legendary crime-fighters, Batman and Robin. The adventure transports the audience from the Big Top of Haly’s Circus to the depths of Arkham Asylum, and from the glittering peaks of the Penguins Iceberg Lounge to the subterranean wonders that await inside the Batcave.

For my Chicago readers: Batman Live is coming to Rockford from November 30th to December 2nd!  You can save $10 when you use the promo code: BATMAN when ordering your tickets HERE.

Have fun and enjoy the show!

Disclosure: I will be given complimentary tickets for the show in exchange for this post thanks to US Family Guide.
